Five-Year BS/MS Program

Full-time students have the option of applying for admission into the five-year combined Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering/Master of Science in Civil Engineering program. A student earns a BSCE after four years of study and an MSCE with one additional year of work. A student in the MSCE program can focus on environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation or water resources engineering. The student can also combine areas of interest into an interdisciplinary MSCE program.

In general, a student in the BSCE/MSCE Program takes two graduate courses during the senior year and completes the remainder of the graduate program over the 12-month period following the senior year. A student may opt for either a thesis track MSCE or a non-thesis track MSCE; the former may require additional time.

Students interested in participating in the BSCE/MSCE Program should submit a letter of intent to the CEE Chairperson during the spring semester of their junior year. Students should be prepared to take at least two graduate courses during the senior year. They should plan ahead by reducing the number of senior-year undergraduate courses through AP credit, transfer credit or academic overloads. Permission for undergraduates to take graduate courses normally requires a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. Students formally apply to the BSCE/MSCE Program by submitting a Graduate Application to the CEE Department during the fall semester of their senior year.

The CEE Department has two tuition scholarships available every year to students in the Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Program. The grant covers tuition during the fifth year in return for 10 hours of work per week devoted to CEE Department activities. Students who wish to be considered for the tuition scholarships must submit a Graduate Application to the CEE Department by April 1st of the spring semester of their junior year. Awardees will be notified in early June of that year.

All graduate courses must be taken at Villanova University.

Students interested in the Combined Bachelor’s / Master’s Program should consult with their CEE academic advisors as early as possible in their undergraduate studies. It is never too early to plan ahead.
