Three Clare Boothe Luce Professorships Available in Five Engineering Areas
Villanova University’s College of Engineering has received funding to
establish up to three prestigious Clare Boothe Luce Professorships. Villanova
currently has five engineering positions available in each major discipline.
Exceptional female engineers who meet Villanova’s requirements will also be
considered for the Clare Boothe Luce Professorships.
Clare Boothe Luce Professorships exist to support “women engineers of the
highest caliber and to guarantee, early in their academic careers, opportunities
commensurate with their considerable talent.” Clare Boothe Luce Professors will
join the College as tenure-track assistant professors.
Available positions (with required areas of interest) include:
- Chemical Engineering: Research areas open, but alternative energy and
bioengineering preferred
- Civil & Environmental Engineering: Active/current Professional
Transportation Planner certification required, with a focus on
transportation systems sustainability, intelligent transportation systems,
operational analysis of highways, and transportation planning (knowledge of
state-of-the-art traffic detector technology preferred)
- Computer Engineering: Emphasis on computer networking, security or
architecture
- Electrical Engineering: Background in power electronics, electric
drives, smart grid or distributed generation
- Mechanical Engineering: Strong fundamentals with a specific interest in
dynamic systems, mechanics, design, and/or aerospace
The Professorships will provide research and professional development funds
to support the development of effective teacher/scholars able to become strong
contributors to the College mission and goals.
The Clare Boothe Luce Professors will be assigned discipline-specific mentors
who guide them in three areas: teaching, research, and service. There is at
least one tenured female faculty member in each department who could serve as a
role model for the new faculty, in addition to the subject matter mentors
normally assigned to new faculty. Because there has been a good foundation of
recruiting women faculty in the past, the Clare Boothe Luce Professors will be
able to learn from women faculty in a variety of stages of their careers.
All new faculty benefit from:
- A reduced teaching load early in their careers to ensure time for course
development and research.
- Access to the Villanova Institute for Teaching and Learning, which
provides a variety of services to all faculty, especially new hires.
- Support for attending the National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI),
a selective program of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)
designed to help engineering faculty become more effective teachers.
- Support for taking short courses available at national ASEE conferences.
- Support for accompanying senior faculty as they interact with major
agencies in their fields.
Requirements (with support from the College)
Develop/maintain a research program leading to publication in peer-reviewed
journals or conference proceedings; secure outside funding for research; teach,
advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; connect with local
industry and professional societies; engage with young women interested in
engineering.
Qualifications
Doctoral degree in relevant area, evidence of research/scholarship with a
coherent agenda for future work and knowledge of potential funding sources, and
some level of teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level; U.S. citizenship or
permanent resident status required
