Each year, 80 Villanova University sophomores participate in the service
learning community by mentoring and tutoring middle school students in
Philadelphia. These students live in the same dorm and take two common
courses on ethics during their sophomore year. Engineering students
"coach" the students in an after-school science and math program at
Cooke Middle School for fifth to ninth grades.
Students are expected to
complete approximately 30 hours of service over the course of the
semester which usually amounts to a weekly commitment of three hours,
including travel time. During the spring semester, engineering students
also participate as mentors in the
VESTED-Mentor Program where they deliver an innovative technology education program for
high school students. The mission of this program is to increase
technical literacy and provide students with valuable, real world
experience in technology. |
