Step 1 - Federal aid application

The FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form by which you declare your family's financial profile. Nearly all need-based awards use the data submitted on the FAFSA, so this document is quite important! As such, you might want to practice with an on-line worksheet before you complete the real FAFSA.

To complete the FAFSA on-line or for practice worksheets, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. To obtain the FAFSA for manual completion, you may either get it from your high school's guidance office, library or any college or university.

The PIN
(Personal Identification Number)

Most government forms can be completed online. If you wish to complete the FAFSA online, you must first obtain a PIN (Personal Identification Number). This serves as a digital "signature" in place of a handwritten signature.

You may obtain a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. If you intend to send in all Federal forms by mail, you do not need a PIN. However, we highly recommend you complete the FAFSA online.
