The Mendel in the 21st Century Symposium
Villanova
University, September 21-23, 2008
Papers welcome on an array of topics:
Philosophy and History of Genetics
Biodiversity and Evolution
Genomics and Medicine
Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications
of Genetics
Biotechnology and Biopharmaceuticals
Genetics, Agriculture, and Global Sustainability
As an Augustinian institution, Villanova University is one of the primary custodians
of the Mendel legacy; as an Augustinian priest trained in mathematics, physics,
and biology, Mendel is an icon of interdisciplinarity. Accordingly, we seek papers
crossing the disciplines on a range of issues impacted by genetics. As science in
the 21st century is an integrated part of society and substantially affects regional
and global politics, economics, the environment, health, and human rights, we hope
to engender meaningful discussion in the academic and greater community from perspectives
across the natural and physical sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities.
Papers will be peer-reviewed. Selected papers will be presented in concurrent
sessions (twenty minutes per paper) on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 23, and
will be eligible to be published together with the papers of the invited speakers.
