The Mendel in the 21st Century Symposium
Villanova University, September 21-23, 2008

Papers welcome on an array of topics:

  • Philosophy and History of Genetics
  • Biodiversity and Evolution
  • Genomics and Medicine
  • Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of Genetics
  • Biotechnology and Biopharmaceuticals
  • Genetics, Agriculture, and Global Sustainability

As an Augustinian institution, Villanova University is one of the primary custodians of the Mendel legacy; as an Augustinian priest trained in mathematics, physics, and biology, Mendel is an icon of interdisciplinarity. Accordingly, we seek papers crossing the disciplines on a range of issues impacted by genetics. As science in the 21st century is an integrated part of society and substantially affects regional and global politics, economics, the environment, health, and human rights, we hope to engender meaningful discussion in the academic and greater community from perspectives across the natural and physical sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities.

Papers will be peer-reviewed. Selected papers will be presented in concurrent sessions (twenty minutes per paper) on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 23, and will be eligible to be published together with the papers of the invited speakers.

A 300-500 word abstract must be submitted by July 1. Please send your abstract as a Word document to mendelsymposium@villanova.edu, and identify the topic of your paper in the subject heading of the email. Decisions will be made by July 15. For more information on the Symposium, see http://www.villanova.edu/events/yearofmendel/symposium.htm.

Villanova University is located in Villanova, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia.
