In the event of a death in your immediate family, you are entitled to be
absent up to five (5) workdays with pay in order to make arrangements for, and
to attend the funeral or other appropriate service. "Immediate family" applies
to your spouse, parent, child, stepchild, stepparent, legal guardian, sister, or
brother.
In the event of a death of your grandparent, grandchild, mother-in-law, or
father-in-law, you are entitled to up to two (2) workdays with pay in order to
attend the funeral or other appropriate service. In the event of a death of your
or your spouse's brother-in-law or sister-in-law, you are entitled to 1 (one)
workday with pay in order to attend the funeral or other appropriate service. In
the event of the death of other family members or close friends, you may use one
of the emergency days under the sick leave policy to attend the funeral or
memorial service in each case.
It is important that you notify your supervisor as soon as possible if you are
required to take a bereavement leave, so that alternate arrangements can be made
for your work. If you have the need for additional time off beyond what is
outlined above, you must make arrangements with your supervisor to take vacation
or unpaid time off.
Please note that bereavement counseling is available at no cost through the
employee assistance program.
