Catholic Social
Teaching and Human Rights
Villanova University,
March 19-20, 2012
Villanova University invites papers and/or creative work on the following themes:
-
Human rights, including the role and development of human rights discourse in Pacem in Terris and/or within the Catholic social teaching tradition, the relationship between human rights and religion, and the status of social and economic rights within the paradigm of human rights;
-
Human rights abuses, including the Responsibility to Protect, international human rights law, human rights advocacy and education;
-
The relationship between public authority and conscience, including the responsibilities of public authorities and the participation of citizens in public life;
-
Social movements for progress, including the role of nonviolent social action, social media, NGO’s, and international governmental agencies and alliances.
Papers should apply Catholic social teaching to these and related issues or illuminate new research in the humanities, social or natural sciences as well as public policy measures that can be brought into dialogue with Catholic social teaching.
Contributors are encouraged to explore:

Themes in Catholic social teaching which illuminate and inform the nature, causes and consequences related to each issue;

Recommendations on how future teaching documents might advance our understanding of the theme.
