Catholic Social Teaching & Work

2006 CONFERENCE THEME:

Catholic Social Teaching and Human Work:
25th Anniversary of Laborem Exercens

September 25-27, 2006

Papers must be submitted by
June 1, 2006 for consideration.

The Journal of Catholic Social Thought will dedicate at least one issue per year to a significant theme or document relevant to Catholic social teaching. Distinguished scholars will be invited to author original papers for presentation at the annual conference hosted at Villanova University and for publication in the Journal.

Both the Journal issue and the conference will be supplemented by an open "call for papers."  Details on how to contribute to the Journal and/or the conference, are posted below.

Contributors are encouraged to explore:

  • Themes in Catholic social teaching which illuminate and inform the nature, causes and consequences related to each issue.
  • Theoretical or empirical research that advances the discourse of Catholic social teaching.
  • Analysis of existing literature and research from the Catholic perspective that is particularly relevant to the issues.
  • Recommendations on how future teaching documents might advance our understanding of the selected topic.

Papers may be selected for presentation at these conferences and/or be included in a future issue of the Journal of Catholic Social Thought, published by Villanova University.

To be considered for conference participation:

Papers are solicited with a first right of refusal for publication in the Journal of Catholic Social Thought. Each must be original work that has not been or is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

A single copy of a final draft must be submitted on or before the deadline specified above in the following format:

  • Format according to the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (1998) or the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (1999).
  • Number all pages.
  • Double space throughout.
  • Indent each paragraph.
  • Do not include headers or footers.
  • Type titles of paragraphs or sections in ALL CAPITALS.
  • When referring to Catholic social teaching or Catholic social thought, capitalize only the word Catholic, unless the phrase is used in a title, in which case all words are to be capitalized.
  • When referring to papal encyclicals, capitalize the title as you would with any title (i.e. Pacem in Terris, Laborem Exercerns).
  • Place footnotes at the bottom of the pages on which they occur.
  • Include a 100 to 150 word abstract.
  • Forward one paper copy of the manuscript.
  • Submit an electronic file in Microsoft Word (doc) format.
  • Electronic files may be made by regular or electronic mail as attachments.

Papers may be selected for presentation at the conference, publication in the Journal or both.  For more information about the conference series, contact:
