NPs gain practical knowledge through Villanova Nursing’s nutrition and health promotion course
Villanova, PA, June 25, 2007 — In their primary
and acute care roles, nurse practitioners assess, diagnose and treat diseases
and conditions seen in their patients. Additionally, they promote health by
providing education and counseling about health issues. A key factor in
achieving wellness is a healthy nutrition lifestyle and maintenance of an
optimal body weight. Despite this, the rates of obesity among American adults
and youth continue to rise. Healthy People 2010, the current national set of
health objectives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has
identified nutrition and prevention of obesity as part of the leading health
objective for the U.S. Healthcare practitioners from a variety of disciplines
are now being called upon to develop health care initiatives that will promote
the achievement of these goals. Knowledge of current issues and trends in
nutrition and understanding of the basis of health education principles is
essential to meeting these goals.
The opportunity to study up to date, essential information in nutrition is available
this fall in Nutrition and Health Promotion, a completely online course offered
through Villanova University College of Nursing Graduate Program. Participants
have the opportunity to study and complete their work at the convenience of
their schedule while still meeting course deadlines and earning three credits in
the Graduate Program. The focus of the course is the study of nutrition and its
role in disease prevention and health promotion. Special emphasis will be placed
on nutrition assessment, obesity prevention, nutrition during the life cycle,
poverty and malnutrition, health behavior change theory, and environmentally
sound nutrition practices. The course is taught by Assistant Professor Marcia
Costello Ph.D., R.D. In addition to nurse practitioners, the course benefits
nurse educators and other health providers.
Registration deadline is August 20. For more information, contact Denise Meikle at
