Villanova Nursing anesthesia student recognized for public relations effort

Villanova, PA, September 5, 2007 — Marie DeFrancesco-Loukas, M.S.N., CRNP, SRNA, a post-master’s student in nurse anesthesia at the Villanova University College of Nursing-Crozer-Chester Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia, won the 2007 American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Public Relations Recognition Award. She received her award at the association’s annual meeting in Denver in August. DeFrancesco-Loukas was honored in the category “Best Public Relations Effort by an Individual, Small Group, Organization, or Company Not Affiliated with a State Association,” based on a Project Innocence poster and CD presentation that she developed for the spring 2007 Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists (PANA) conference in Hershey, Pa.

Project Innocence evolved in response to the October 2006 Amish school shooting in Lancaster, Pa. Several Amish girls died in the shooting, with others critically wounded. Three academic institutions of student nurse anesthetists in the Philadelphia area (those from Villanova, St. Joseph’s University and LaSalle University) donated clothing, food, toys, books, and gift certificates. On January 24, 2007 during National Nurse Anesthetists Week, the students traveled to Lancaster with carloads of donations. They spent time with the families and still remain in contact with them.
