Sigma Theta Tau is the only international honor society of nursing. The Alpha
Nu chapter was established at Villanova in 1966 to recognize superior
achievement, leadership, high professional standards, creative work, and
commitment to the high ideals of the nursing profession among nursing students.
Research grants, conferences, publications, films, exhibits and awards are
extended nationally by Sigma Theta Tau. At Villanova, membership is an honor
conferred on students by invitation. This follows after a committee review of
qualified students.
Undergraduate candidates for Sigma Theta Tau must:
- Have completed at least one-half of the required nursing component of the baccalaureate curriculum
- Have achieved an overall grade point average of at least 3.0
- Rank in the upper 35% of the class
RN-BSN students are considered separately. They must:
- Have completed 12 credits at Villanova
- Have achieved a GPA of 3.0
- Rank in the upper 35% of the class
Students in the Graduate Program must:
- Have completed 1/4 of the program of study
- Have achieved a GPA of 3.5
Nurse leaders from the community must:
- Practice nursing in their country
- Hold a minimum of a baccalaureate or the equivalent in any field
- Demonstrate excellence in nursing
The completed
Intent Form for the appropriate type of member (Undergraduate, Graduate, or
Nurse Leader) and two completed
Endorsement Forms from current members of Sigma Theta Tau International are
required to be considered for induction into Alpha Nu Chapter. These completed
forms need to be submitted to the Graduate or Undergraduate Faculty Counselors
by May 1st.

Awards and Scholarships
Awards and scholarships are presented each year to recognize those whose
contributions to nursing fulfill the goals of Sigma Theta Tau. Recipients will
be selected by members of the Awards and Scholarships Committee and the
Executive Board. The awards and scholarships are presented at the annual
induction and awards ceremony.
