What
makes Villanova Nursing different from other programs?
As an undergraduate student in the College of Nursing you will begin nursing
courses in your freshman year and start clinical experiences in your sophomore
year. Because the College has no “home hospital” your
clinical experiences are in major medical teaching
centers and smaller community hospitals and other agencies. You quickly learn to
adapt to new environments and gain exposure to a variety of settings, clinicians
and specialties.
At Villanova, you benefit from a values orientation with 6 credits of philosophy
and 6 credits of theology. The majority of our faculty are doctorally-prepared
and teach in both the classroom and clinical areas. There are additional study
opportunities available, for instance, you may spend your sophomore year abroad.
We are also known for the strength of our advising system and student support
services.
What about housing?
Four years of campus housing is guaranteed for nursing majors. College of
Nursing students are integrated into the full Villanova campus experience. There
is no separate nursing dormitory. Students may choose to live off campus
beginning in their junior year.
What about
transportation? Do students need a car?
Cars are not permitted on campus until junior year. Students are responsible for
their own transportation to clinicals and frequently carpool or use public
transportation. The Undergraduate office works with students who need to
carpool.
What are the
opportunities for international experiences?
Nursing students have many opportunities for international experiences while at
Villanova. You may spend your sophomore year
abroad at the University of Manchester College
of Nursing in
Manchester, England. There are shorter term experiences over Spring Break or at the end of academic year for academic
credit, such as Chulucanas, Peru for Health Promotion clinical credits or
Galway, Ireland for a 3-credit elective. Nursing students also participate in
University service trips, such as Habitat for Humanity. They may also choose
University semester abroad experiences in non-nursing fields (e.g., language).
This adds one summer to the nursing curriculum with completion of the program in
August as opposed to May.
What are your retention
and graduation rates?
The College of Nursing retains more than 90% of students from freshman to
sophomore year and over 90% of students graduate within 4 years. Those students
not retained most frequently change to a different major, wish to transfer to a
college closer to home, or leave for personal reasons.
What SAT scores do you require?
When reviewing applications, the College of Nursing looks at a student’s entire
application, not simply SAT scores.
Can I
play sports or enroll in ROTC while I’m a nursing major?
Absolutely. Many of our students play a sport or are in ROTC programs. Our
student advisors work with individuals to help ensure they fulfill curriculum
requirements.
Am I eligible for financial
assistance?
Financial assistance is granted on the basis of need and scholastic ability, and
includes Villanova University scholarships, grants, student loans, federal
grants, state grants, and scholarships from outside sources such as
corporations, unions, charitable trusts, and service clubs. Applicants may visit the
University Office of Financial Assistance web site for more information.
