FAQs

How long will it take to earn a BSN?
Most RNs have some college credits which transfer toward partial fulfillment of the BSN at Villanova. Full-time students can finish in two semesters; part-time students may complete the program in four to six semesters. After admission to the BSN/MSN Gateway Program, the student must complete the BSN degree within six semesters and the MSN degree within five years.

How does the Gateway admission process work?
Admission to the Gateway Program is a two phase process:

Phase I begins with admission to the baccalaureate program. Interested RNs declare their career goal to complete the BSN degree only or both BSN and MSN degrees during the application process. Students selecting both BSN and MSN degree programs also receive "provisional admission" status in the graduate program and are permitted to take up to 12 graduate level credits from a range of 12 graduate level courses while meeting the requirements for the BSN. RNs who are working full time are eligible for a 30% reduction on tuition for BSN courses.

Phase II begins when the student is within 18 credits of completion of the BSN requirements. Application is submitted for "full admission" to the MSN program. Gateway Program students must follow the same admission procedures and meet the same admission requirements as any student applying for the MSN program. Students in the BSN/MSN Gateway Program work closely with the Gateway Program coordinator and the Graduate Program director to plan for transition into the MSN program. After admission to the BSN/MSN Gateway Program, the student must complete the BSN degree within six semesters and the MSN degree within five years.

What courses will I have to take?
Few RNs have taken theology courses. The Villanova University BSN program requires 2 theology electives. Likewise, few RNs have taken a course in Health Care Ethics and this is also a requirement.

Will all of my college credits transfer towards the BSN?
Any credits taken at an accredited college or university will transfer provided they:

  • fit with the BSN curriculum
  • are a grade C or better
  • do not exceed 68 credits in the number of non-nursing credits transferred

The RN to BSN curriculum is flexible in that:

  • A minimum of 5 credits of math or science electives can be transferred
  • 9 humanities credits can be transferred
  • 3 social/behavioral science credits and be transferred
  • 3 free elective courses can be transferred

Will my nursing courses transfer?

The College of Nursing has articulation agreements with the colleges listed below. Some or most of the nursing courses are transferred. Click on the college you attended for more information. Other nursing courses are considered on an individual basis.

What examinations do I have to take and when?
If your nursing (associate degree graduates only) GPA is 3.0 or higher, the required Excelsior examinations are waived. If your GPA is less than 3.0 the Excelsior examinations are required prior to taking NUR 4000 level courses.

Does Villanova offer any tuition reductions for RNs?
Villanova's College of Nursing recognizes the importance of baccalaureate-prepared nurses, especially during the current nursing shortage. All RNs who are working full-time are eligible for this tuition reduction. For more information, contact the Coordinator, Dr. Joyce S. Willens, BSN/MSN Gateway Program for Registered Nurses.
