Essay Exams

Many college students are unfamiliar with essay type tests. Others, even though they know the examination material well, do poorly on this type of test. A third group, those wishing to improve their examination skills, may also find the suggestions below helpful.

  • Set up a time schedule. Before beginning to write, calculate how much time you have for each question. Keep in mind the number of points allotted to each question. Then stick to your schedule. If you do find yourself short of time, put down the answer in outline form. Never leave an essay answer blank. Partial credit is usually given if very little has been written.

  • Answer the easier questions first. This often helps to avoid “Examination Panic” and builds confidence as you write about something you know. However, be careful not to exceed the time allotted for these questions.

  • Make a brief outline before beginning to write. This need be only a few scribbled words in a margin. Write just enough to organize your answer so that it has a beginning, middle and end. Part of the time for each question should be devoted to thinking and planning in this manner. Be sure to do this even though others around you are writing.

  • Give the answer the same emphasis as the question. Note carefully exactly what is called for in the question. Pay close attention to key words such as “compare” and “evaluate”. Check also to see if the question has more than one part. Avoid writing haphazardly everything you know about the subject. Answer the question the way it is asked and answer it completely.

  • Give evidence for and illustrate essay answers. Depending on the question, support generalizations with facts, illustrations, or reasons. Unsupported statements are often graded down or receive only partial credit.

  • Take time at the end to reread the paper. When writing in haste we tend to misspell words, write illegibly, miswrite words, and leave things out. Last minute corrections or additions may add appreciably to your grade and improve the general impression of your paper.
