What are Villanovans saying about AlcoholEdu® for College?

Don’t take our word for it! Villanova students have been taking AlcoholEdu® for College for seven years. Read about what some of them had to say below.  Student essays:

Why AlcoholEdu® for College?

AlcoholEdu® for College is an objective, science-based, online alcohol prevention program designed specifically for college students as the cornerstone of a comprehensive campus prevention program.

The purpose of AlcoholEdu® for College is to prevent or reduce alcohol-related problems among college students while providing a statistically accurate description of the alcohol-related attitudes, experiences, behaviors, and health education needs of their students.

Backed by research:
Rigorous evaluation concluded that students who completed the program experienced a 50% reduction in negative academic and personal consequences. The same evaluation concluded that students who completed AlcoholEdu for College increased protective behaviors of others (e.g., watching out for their friends). Students who did not take AlcoholEdu for College had greater instances of heavy episodic drinking.

AlcoholEdu® for College is a key component of Villanova University’s Health Promotion program.

How Does It Work?

The first part of the program (Part I) takes roughly 3 hours to complete and can be completed in multiple sittings. Students can log in and out of the program. Part I ends with an exam and survey (for those over age 18). Students must earn a minimum score of 75% or higher to pass and receive credit for completion of the course. The deadline for incoming first year students to complete Part I is August 17, 2009.

The second part of the program (Part II) includes a short module and survey. Approximately 45 days after completing Part I, students will receive an email invitation to return to the course and complete Part II. The deadline to complete Part II is October 14, 2009.

AlcoholEdu® for College includes three surveys that measure students’ alcohol-related attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are strictly confidential. Villanova University will only receive information about the first year student body as a whole and will never see individual student responses. Students can feel confident in providing truthful responses to the survey questions. Students who are under age 18 at the time they are taking the course will not receive any of the surveys, but they will still complete the rest of the course curriculum.

AlcoholEdu® for College is MANDATORY for all incoming first year students at Villanova University. It is important that every student complete the course to avoid disciplinary consequences through the University.

I don’t drink, so why do I have to take AlcoholEdu® for College?

First and foremost, we congratulate you for choosing to abstain. There are many other students at Villanova who are making the same choice. However, it is important to recognize that students are affected by their peers’ decisions around alcohol during their Villanova experience. It is important that every student is equipped with accurate and credible information about alcohol so that they can make safer, responsible choices for themselves and encourage their peers to do the same. Chances are that even if you do not drink, you will encounter someone who does. If you think about it, the information in AlcoholEdu® could help to save a life, keep someone from getting hurt, or reduce someone’s risk for poor academic performance as a result of alcohol use. AlcoholEdu® for College is a key element of this support for healthy choices.
