How is the Office of Health Promotion unique from the Student Health Center and Counseling Center?
The Office of Health Promotion is committed to providing a
premiere RESOURCE and REFERRAL hub for information on topics stretching the six
dimensions of health – Social, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural, Emotional, and
Spiritual. Professional staff members are qualified to consult with students on
the latest information on college health issues and develop programs and
educational opportunities for students, while peer educators are trained to
provide peer-to-peer programs on alcohol and other drugs, sexual assault, and
sexual health.
The Office of Health Promotion is NOT a treatment center.
However, students who request more information and/or consultation about a
psychological or medical concern are referred to the Counseling Center and
Student Health Center, respectively.
The Office of Health Promotion works very closely with the
Counseling Center and Student Health Center to ensure students are aware of
their resources and services available to them as members of the Villanova
community.
Can I drop in at the Office or do I need an appointment?
Any student is welcome to make an appointment or stop by the Office at any
time during regular office hours, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm. When
available, a professional staff member will direct students to the most
appropriate resources on topic(s) of interest. In the event that a staff member
is not available to assist a drop-in student, a student may schedule an
appointment to meet with a member of the Office staff. Evening hours are
available upon request.
What are the hours of the Office?

How can I get involved in Health Promotion projects and events?
There are a number of ways to get involved with Health Promotion projects and events.
The best way to become involved is to become a POWER peer
educator! By being a POWER peer educator, you not only serve as a student
voice, but have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback
about student issues and concerns. Not to mention, you automatically become
part of a family of over 50 students! To access a POWER application, go to
POWER section.
If you do not have the time and energy to commit to POWER, Health Promotion
also offers student internship experiences on a volunteer and “for credit”
basis. Students who wish to apply for an internship should complete the
INTERNSHIP APPLICATION. Applications can be picked up in our office or you can
email
stacy.andes@villanova.edu
for more information. Each internship experience is geared to fit the
student’s needs and interests and matches the student with the most appropriate
professional staff member for mentorship.
Currently, we have accepted students for the 2008 – 09 academic year. Students who are interested
in developing health promotion projects and in
serving on an interdisciplinary team of students, staff and faculty should
check back for further opportunities. Potential projects include:
-
the development of a health related
DVD to be shared with all incoming students and their families.
The DVD will consist of 5-10 minute educational modules that focus on
student health concerns shared by new students and their families; check out one of the three DVD modules created by Villanova student interns, Angela Caruolo, Lauren DiSpirito, and Andrew Greig.
Focused topics for 2008-09 include alcohol and other drug use, sexual
health, and financial health;
-
the facilitation of an interactive and
informative Health Promotion website;
-
the development of a Office of Health
Promotion annual campaign that brands the Office as the
premier site on campus for health information; and
-
the planning, implementation and
evaluation of events including "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "West Fest" and “Love the Skin You’re In: The faces and fashions of Villanova University”;
-
the
facilitation of e-newsletter HealthBytes.

What is the process for becoming a POWER peer educator?
POWER is always recruiting! You can submit an application at any time,
and it will be kept on file until the next active recruitment period which
typically occurs each fall semester. After submitting your application and all
other required materials, you will interview with the Coordinator of Peer
Education Programs
and a current peer educator to assess your expectations of the program and the
ways in which you might contribute to and benefit from POWER. All accepted
students are required to attend a MANDATORY training which typically takes place
just after the New Year. For more information about POWER and how to get
involved, click here.
