Maintaining Student Status

If the international student can not maintain the number of credits appropriate for his or her level of study her or she MUST make an appointment at the International Student Office IMMEDIATELY. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN THE STUDENT BEING TERMINATED WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY DATABASE SEVIS

If an international student fails to fulfill his or her responsibilities as set out by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Villanova is obligated to terminate the international student’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (hereafter SEVIS) record. When the student’s SEVIS record is terminated he or she MUST either:

  • Seek a Reinstatement to Status which must be applied for through the International Student Office;
  • Leave the U.S. immediately.

To remain in the U.S. for an extended period after being terminated by the International Student Office may result in the student being barred from the U.S. for either 3 years or 5 years depending on the length of the overstay.

Below is a partial list of situations when the student may be deemed to have violated his or her F-1 student status. BEFORE taking any action which you are unsure may be deemed a violation of your F-1 student status please check with the International Student Office.

  • Working off-campus without authorization
  • Applying for an extension after the program date or the I-20 has passed
  • Failing to take a full course of study for the required semesters

Please note: The above examples are NOT an exhaustive list of situations when a student may violate his or her F-1 status.
