Learning Community THEMES for 2008-2009

Learning Communities at Villanova . . . Get the most out of your experience and apply for one of these communities!

All first-year commuting students are strongly encouraged to participate in a learning community as it helps the students become connected to campus while living in the local community.

Learning Communities at Villanova are . . .

  • an innovative educational environment that integrates the academic, co-curricular, and communal aspects of your first year at college.
  • deeper and more thoughtful connections with their faculty (an important predictor of academic success in college) in Augustine and Culture Seminar
  • opportunities to form a close community inside and outside of the classroom.
  • to explore a topic that is of common interest to you.

Students in our commuter learning community form connections and often close friendships with students sharing the experience of "going away to college" while still living at home.  Students learn together and form a community through their shared coursework complemented by co-curricular programs.

WHY JOIN?   WHAT SOME STUDENTS HAVE SAID . . .

"The learning community for commuters really helped me feel connected with the Villanova community.  It was wonderful to be able to spend some time each week with other commuters who had a similar college experience.  Most of the commuters grew up in the greater Philadelphia area as I did, so we already had something in common.  Our group really bonded throughout my freshman year." (Female, Finance Major, '09)

"Being in the program helped me to feel part of the bigger Villanova community, even though I didn't live on campus.  My learning community was more than just leadership, it was a gateway to meeting new people and becoming involved on campus.  Commuting can be difficult at times.  The learning communities make the transition from high school to college easier since you can surround yourself with people going through similar changes."
