Selecting Students to Participate in the Learning Communities
- Students who apply to one of the learning communities are selected
primarily on a random basis although priority is given to students who apply
before May 1, 2008. You must pay your deposit to hold your place in the
class before being able to apply.
- We also seek students from all colleges and from a variety of geographical
locations (for the residential programs).
- Most participants are notified of their selection by mid-July.
In addition to the learning communities based on specified themes that
students may sign up for, many first year students will find themselves in a
learning community, based on their housing and first year seminar (ACS)
assignment. These communities are typically in some of the smaller first
year residence halls on main campus.
Students share the same first year seminar professor and live
together in the same residence hall. The professor works with the residence life
staff in creating learning opportunities for the students in the hall, both relating
to the academic course work as well as relating to a student’s first year of college.
Students do not apply for these learning communities but are placed in them by
virtue of their housing assignment.
Applying to a Learning Community
-
Information about the learning communities is sent to all accepted new
students in late January and in early April.
- You may select a first and a second choice of the themed learning
community options. You may also select just a first choice.
