The Villanova - National Hispanic Institute Leadership Service Center
As Americans have gone through the education system, advanced into higher
learning, and finally joined the ranks of the professional world a certain
phenomenon of "disconnect" has grown with the American community. the more
a student dedicates his or herself to solely educational and professional
success, the less time and attention are spent on issues affecting their
communities and the role of community leadership. This phenomenon, causes
a "disconnect" of our country's most successful with their communities, learning
a void in community leadership roles that end up being filled by "the next
best".
In 1979, the National Hispanic Institute (NHI) was founded to address the
issues of "disconnect" within the Hispanic/Latino community and address the
future leadership needs of the US Latino/Hispanic community. NHI's primary
work was to provide high achieving Latino youth in high school and college with
key learning experiences that hone their skills as future leaders in the Latino
community. Today, NHI is affiliated with over 120 colleges and
universities throughout the United States, conducts national research through
its Collaborative Research Center (CRC) in Maxwell, Texas, and has established
partner Leadership Service Centers (LSCs) to serve every major region in the
United States. Additionally, its programs have served over 50,000
students, who have an over 98% rate of college enrollment, an over 90%
graduation rate in 4 to 5 years, and of which over 66% pursue graduate studies.
