Responsibilities
- Keeps a daily counseling log for all counseled students and record all
data into CMA Relational Database in the Banner System by each months end.
- Attends all scheduled meetings and programs pertaining to Freshmen
Retention, focus area, timely topics and discussions, one-on-one meetings,
and CMA staff meetings.
- Works on retention case load to provide academic support, monitoring,
financial aid, career advisement, and general emotional support.
- Coordinates all freshmen notifications pertaining to Freshmen Retention
and focus area. This involves creating an email distribution list of all
freshmen multicultural students and working with CMA staff and the campus
community (Career Services, Internship Coordinators, Athletics, Pre-Med
Advisor, Pre-Law Advisors, etc.) in serving as a liaison to determine
opportunities for freshmen students.
- Being flexible to change in terms of program reevaluation, which will be
conducted periodically, as needed.
- Periodic presentations on and off campus as they relate to position and
student affairs.
- Conducts programming for students as necessary (i.e. Timely Topics,
registration, “how to” workshops, shopping trips, etc…).
- Sends out all mid and final semester grade progress reports to freshmen
in the program.
- Creates, implements, and attends all programs pertaining to focus areas.
- Coordinates programming for Freshmen Retention and focus area
programming (this includes but is not limited to: creating flyers, reserving
space, notifying students, sign up sheets, transportation, contacting
speakers, etc..).
- Refers students to Esther Yee-Rohen, (our in house counselor), when
necessary.
- Professional attire required.
Classification/Hours
This is a 20-hour per week assistantship open to Master's degree candidates.
Hours are flexible between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with occasional evening and other
hours for workshops, seminars, and related activity. Dates of the contract are from August
15 until May 23.
Benefits
The position includes a tuition waiver and master stipend. Graduate Assistant
may not hold other forms of employment without prior permission from the Center
for Multicultural Affairs.
Immediate Supervisor and Colleagues
The Graduate Assistant will report directly to Nancy Lee, Associate Director,
and Charisma Presley, Assistant Director in the Center. He/she will work as one
member of the seven person professional staff in the Center and therefore
collaborate frequently on projects, meetings, and events.
Qualifications
- Preference for individual with an interest in pursuing professional
opportunities in the field of counseling, communication, education, and
diversity.
- Prefer prior work experience in, and/or proven familiarity with,
programming, research and student affairs.
- Willingness and ability to work with undergraduate students in a variety
of capacities. - Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication
skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Access, Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint. - Self-starter with initiative and instinct for new
and creative solutions.
- Proven team player willing to assist colleagues with planning and
execution of projects and program activity.
Graduate assistantships are academic merit based award programs which provide
students with work opportunities in a job closely related to the scholastic
field of study. Assistantships are available only to graduate students who have
been accepted into a degree granting program.
