What is the SAFE ZONE program?
The purpose of the Safe Zone program is to provide safe spaces on campus that
are highly visible and easily identifiable to all people as spaces where support
and understanding are key and where bigotry and discrimination are not
tolerated. By placing the Safe Zone symbol on their door, Safe Zone volunteers
signify that within their space all people will be treated with respect
regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation,
class, religion, age or ability.
SAFE ZONE Volunteers strive to:
- Be a resource
- Commit to personal growth in spite of the discomfort of a situation
- Recognize his or her own prejudices
- Join others with the common purpose of developing a culture at Villanova and
elsewhere that is free of homophobia, racism, hate, discrimination
- Believe that all people should be treated with dignity and respect regardless of
race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion,
age or ability
Become a SAFE ZONE Volunteer?
Each semester members of the Villanova Community (faculty, students and staff)
are invited to apply to become a Safe Zone volunteer. Selected applicants attend
a 90 minute training session, which is offered each semester. Once trained, the
Safe Zone volunteer displays the Safe Zone logo to create a safe space for
conversations about difference. Safe Zones are especially for those who may not
be feeling comfortable having such discussions because of a discriminatory
remark made in their presence. Though volunteers are generally selected by
invitation, anyone interested in becoming a Safe Zone volunteer may contact
Teri
O'Brien, in the Office of Student Life.
