A Guide for Living in the Apartments

RAs are there to assist you.

Living within your building are three Resident Assistants, who are members of the Residence Life staff. These individuals are graduate or undergraduate students who will be available to assist you with check-in/check-out, maintenance and custodial concerns, personal issues and academic problems. In addition, Resident Assistants will hold periodic meetings to update you on new developments within the apartments and the University, as well as to solicit feedback regarding your satisfaction with life in the apartments.

Should you or your roommates need assistance, a directory listing the locations of the Resident Assistants in your building can be found in the lobby of your building. The duty hours for these staff members are as follows:

Sunday - Wednesday While RAs are not scheduled for nightly duty, they are still available to assist you. Please feel free to knock on your RA's door or send them an email if you need assistance
Thursday One Resident Assistant will be available for residents in each building between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
Friday and Saturday Three Resident Assistants are on duty in Klekotka and Moulden, three Resident Assistants are on duty in Rudolph and Welsh, three Resident Assistants are on duty in Farley and Gallen, and three Resident Assistants are on duty in Jackson and St. Clare, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 2:30 a.m at the lobby desks. Resident Assistants are available for residents until 7:00 a.m. (RAs on duty will be in their rooms between 2:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.).

All Resident Assistants will post "apartment staff hours of availability" next to their apartment doors.

Guidelines for Living Within Your Community

The following guidelines are established to ensure a safe and healthy living environment for West Campus residents. All policies and procedures found in the Blue Book, "Student Handbook" and the Residence Life Section, are also applicable to students living in the apartments.

Access

Residents of the West Campus Apartments will be able to access the apartment building in which they live only, on a 24 hour basis. For security purposes the following applies:

Exterior stairwell doors will be locked each day between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. During these hours, access the apartments via the lobby doors.

All Apartment Residents will be able to access all eight apartment buildings during visitation hours - 10 a.m. to Midnight on Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

All Guests (students and non-students) will have to call the person they are visiting from the call box on the outside of the buildings to gain access.

Alcohol Consumption and Social Gatherings

Only students who are 21 years of age or older are permitted by the University to possess and consume moderate amounts of alcoholic beverages in their own apartment unit.

Students residing in the apartments who are under the legal age of 21 may not have individuals who are 21 consume alcoholic beverages in their apartment unit.

It is the responsibility of those individuals hosting a social gathering to ensure that the laws regulating the serving and consumption of alcohol by minors is adhered to.

Persons hosting a social gathering are responsible for all guests and any resulting problems from the behavior of guests.

Residence Life staff members may access any apartment sponsoring a social gathering. Staff members have the authority to direct the occupants of an apartment to conclude a social gathering when sponsors and/or their guests do not adhere to University policy.

Sponsors of a social gathering must keep their apartment door closed and maintain control of those entering and leaving their apartment. Open containers and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited in hallways, stairwells, lounges, common areas or on the grounds of the West Campus.

Beer kegs in any condition, beer balls, any similar type of common source and their equivalents in volume of beer and/or alcohol content are prohibited.

Please refer to the Blue Book, "Student Handbook" for further information.

Noise

Apartment residents should be considerate and respectful of their neighbors. Radios, stereos, musical instruments and other sound-amplification equipment should be utilized at levels that do not disturb other residents, faculty and/or University neighbors. You should be especially conscious of how sound travels at night when returning to your building from the parking lot or main pathways.

Note: The placement of speakers in apartment or hallway windows for the purpose of directing music or noise into public areas is prohibited. Outdoor activities involving microphones, speakers, sound systems or bands are prohibited.

Outdoor Events

Need Building Name

All outdoor events must be approved by the Office for Residence Life and the Student Development Office. For reasons of fire safety, sanitation and grounds maintenance, the use of grills and/or hibachis are prohibited in and around the West Campus Apartments, except in a designated picnic area. In the absence of formal approval, gatherings in the designated picnic area are limited to no more than 8 individuals. To reserve the picnic area, please contact our office.

Pets

No pets are permitted in the apartments.

Room Changes

Students interested in making a room change should contact the Office for Residence Life, ext. 94153. Room changes are the exclusive responsibility of Residence Life. Changes made without approval may result in loss of apartment residency.

Smoking

All residence halls and apartments are smoke free. Smoking is strictly prohibited in all areas (public areas and student rooms) of these buildings.

Windows

Under no condition should windows be blocked or window screens removed except in the case of an emergency. Displays such as banners, collections, decals and signs (electric or otherwise) are prohibited. Additionally, it is recommended that residents keep windows locked.
