If you have a vacancy in your room or
apartment, Residence Life plans to fill your vacancy. You do not have the
option to keep your room as a single.
Here is what happens when there is a vacancy
When your roommate(s) informs Residence Life that he/she will be moving out
of his/her assignment, the following will take place:
- Residence Life will contact you that you have an impending vacancy in your
room or apartment.
- You will be asked if you have anyone in mind to fill the vacancy.
Generally, you will be given one (1) week to fill the vacancy on your own with a
student who is eligible to reside on campus.
- If you do not have a preferred roommate, Residence Life will offer your
vacancy to someone seeking a room change.
- You will be contacted via phone and/or email, given the name of the student
seeking to fill the vacancy in your room/apartment and will be asked to meet
with the student, prior to Residence Life approving the change.
- In cases of medical need or other urgent room situations, Residence Life
may have to respond too quickly for you to meet a new roommate before we assign
them to the vacancy in your room. If this occurs, our office will call to notify
you that we are filling the vacancy, and provide you with the person’s name and
expected move-in date.
In the majority of cases, Residence Life will work with you to find a
compatible roommate. As circumstances require, however, we may have to exercise
our ability under the terms of your housing contract to fill the space in your
room without consulting you about your preferences.
Note: We expect you to be hospitable and welcoming
to individuals interested in filling the vacancy in your room/apartment. Should
we have reason to believe that you are being consistently and intentionally
discouraging to prospective roommates, we will exercise our option to move you
to a different assignment in order to best meet the needs of students who are
waiting for room changes or housing assignments.
Mid-Year Vacancies
If you know your roommate(s) will be moving out over
the break and you have a preferred roommate, you will need to do the following:
- Submit a letter to Marie Schauder, which includes:
- the name of student
requested to fill the vacancy;
- name, social security number and signature(s) of
student(s) remaining in the room/apartment.
- If the letter is not signed by all residents remaining in the
room/apartment, Residence Life will not approve the request.
- The individual you wish as a replacement must complete a Room Change Request
Card (available for pick-up in the Office for Residence Life).
- Roommate(s) leaving must
cancel his/her Housing Contract before Residence
Life can process your replacement request.
