Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 2009 Special Olympics
Fall Festival! Please make sure to read through the various opportunities that
are available to you as a volunteer. While we will attempt to accommodate every request, we cannot guarantee
placement for any volunteers to a specific venue. However, the best way to
obtain a desired shift and placement is to register as early as possible. Also,
please keep in mind that the highest volunteer traffic comes in the early- to
mid-afternoon shifts, which may present additional difficulties for volunteer
allotment.
For Villanova students, administrators, faculty and staff, please contact our On-Campus Volunteers committee to inquire about any of the opportunities listed below. For all others, please contact our Off-Campus Volunteers committee to inquire about the opportunities available.
If you have any questions, or for more information, please contact the Special
Olympics Office at (610) 519-7244 or info@villanovaspo.com

Volunteer Opportunities
Competition
Competition volunteers are needed to cheer on the athletes, keep score and
time, act as flag and line judges as well as ball runners where appropriate. |
|
Security
Security needs an unlimited number of volunteers to ensure the safety of all the
athletes, coaches, and visitors at all of our various events including Olympic
town, opening and closing ceremonies, Saturday's dance, every competition and
even overnight at the hotels. |
Housing
Housing needs volunteers to stay overnight at the hotels Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday
nights to assist with athletes and coaches as needed. Housing volunteers have a
great time hanging out in the hotels and
interacting with the athletes! |

Healthy Athletes
Since officially launching in 1997 as a Special Olympics program, Healthy Athletes has grown to provide seven different health screenings with the goal to improve athletes' ability to train and compete in Special Olympics.
The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Initiative includes these disciplines: Fit Feet, FUNfitness, Healthy Hearing, Health Promotion, Opening Eyes®. MedFest and Special Smiles®. |
|
Facilities
The Facilities team will be responsible for the delivery and set-up of
equipment at every venue. From soccer balls to tables and chairs, they will
ensure that each venue is prepared for the day’s events. |
|
Food
Food volunteers are needed to help serve the athletes in line, preparing and
delivering bag lunches, and making sure everyone is enjoying their meals in our
wonderful dining facilities!
|
|
Medical
Lots of medical volunteers are needed to be at every sporting venue,
ceremony, and even the athletes dance to act as the first link in the chain of
response to a hurt athlete by radioing in any medical emergency to the medical
base. Medical volunteers must provide verification of first aid and CPR
training. Those interested in becoming medical volunteers should contact medical@villanovaspo.com and indicate this interest under the "special request" field on the volunteer form. |
|
Entertainment
Entertainment will need volunteers on both Saturday and Sunday in the Quad to
help run Olympic Town, a 2-day party/carnival with music, games, and fun for all
the athletes and volunteers. They will also need help on Saturday night to setup
and breakdown the Victory Dance in the Pavilion! |
Special Programs
|
A Escort
Do you want a close, personal relationship with an athlete? This is the
program for you. Our athlete escorts are paired up with an athlete for the
entire weekend to provide encouragement, assistance and a high sense of spirit. If interested in this special volunteer opportunity, please contact humanresources@villanovaspo.com.

Local Program Hosts (LPH)
Exclusively for Villanova freshmen, this program is designed to give select
freshmen an extensive experience with the Special Olympics program at Villanova
University. LPHs are assigned to a specific county for the entire weekend where
they will eat meals with and cheer on the athletes during competition. LPHs
serve as ambassadors for Villanova. As such, LPHs are expected to make weekly
Tuesday night meetings from September until the Fall Festival. The meetings are
designed to bond together the over 80 LPHs as well as educate them about the
mission and ideals of Special Olympics. The LPH program originated at Villanova
University and, due to its success, has now been adopted by Special Olympics on
a national level. Click here to apply. (This is a freshmen only opportunity)

Team Coordinators (TC)
A great opportunity for those seeking an intense athletic experience, the
team coordinators are paired with either a soccer or volleyball team for a day
and are there to provide constant encouragement for the athletes during the time
they need it most: competition. If interested, please contact competition@villanovaspo.com. |
Venue Coordinators (VC)
Another great opportunity for those seeking an intense athletic experience,
venue coordinators work hand-in-hand with the Fall Festival student committee in
running a specific competition venue. VCs are responsible for assigning
volunteers to keep time and score as well as communicating any issues within the
venue to the appropriate student committee member. If interested, please contact competition@villanovaspo.com.

Student Corporate Liaison (SCL)
The Student Corporate Liason program is an integral part of the Special Olympics Festival at Villanova University, not only in its functions but in its foundation. Villanova University prides itself on its community centered philosophy and there is no better representation of this than our Special Olympics Fall Festival. The SCL program intends to give corporate sponsors a behind the scenes, enhanced volunteering experience throughout the festival weekend. The program is restricted to Villanova students and their goal is to be an ambassador for the university and a liaison for Special Olympics. The program is truly beneficial as it personalizes the volunteering experience for the corporate personnel. The SCL program parallels and exemplifies Villanova University’s high priority of the community philosophy and most importantly provides the opportunity to increase awareness about Special Olympics to our community and beyond. |
