Update from Health Center sent to all students
Dear Students-
As often happens on college campuses in the winter months, we have recently
had many students sick with an illness that causes nausea, vomiting, and
diarrhea. Some people may additionally have a low-grade fever, chills, headache,
and fatigue. There have been some rumors but, in fact, the illness appears to be
due to a virus. It begins suddenly, and is usually brief, with symptoms lasting
one or two days. While the illness is not serious, people may feel very sick and
vomit many times a day; the virus is contagious. When people are ill, they
should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which is the related
concern.
People can become infected with the virus in several ways including:
- Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus, and
then placing their hand in their mouth, or
- Having direct contact with another person who is infected and
showing symptoms (for example, when caring for someone with the
illness, or sharing foods or eating utensils with someone who is
ill).
|
You can decrease your chance of becoming ill by following these preventative
steps:
- Frequently WASHING YOUR HANDS especially after bathroom
visits,
- Thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting contaminated surfaces after
an episode of illness, using a bleach-based household cleaner,
- Removing and washing clothing or linens that may be contaminated
with virus after an episode of illness (using hot water and soap),
and
- Not sharing food or drink with those who are or have been sick.

Of course, the Health Center continues to be available to serve you on a
24-hour basis. (610) 519-4070.
