Installation of
New Computer Equipment
UNIT provides initial installation of Personal Computers
and Local Area network servers that were purchased by departments
in accordance with the 'Computing Resource Procurement'
policy. The installation includes the connection of the
hardware to the campus network plus installation of one
of the University's standard PC images.
Online Help
Most software packages are delivered with context
sensitive on-line help. Users are encouraged to take
advantage of this feature.
Help Desk
UNIT provides centralized help facilities for all university
computer users. The help desk staff can be reached via
a central phone number: 9-7777. The staff will
attempt to diagnose the caller's problem and either solve
it directly over the phone or ensure that the problem
is resolved by someone else in UNIT.
Request for Services
For small systems or modifications to existing hardware/software
configuration, users are asked to submit a Request
for Services Form. All requests require approval by
the department director or chair. Together with the requesting
department, requests for services will be analyzed as
to their feasibility, impact on other departments, costs,
as well as short and long term resource requirements.
Requests that require less than two person days to be
completed can be approved and initiated by the appropriate
UNIT department manager or director. Requests requiring
more than two days have to be authorized by the Executive
Director UNIT. Large project requests that span more
than a single department, require capital expenditures
and more than two weeks of human resources have to be
approved by the University Council for Information Technology
(UCIT) and follow a defined decision making process.
