Streaming video allows people to view a video without having to download
it in it's entirety. The video "passes through" the viewers computer.
Villanova has two different streaming audio/video servers on campus. A
Helix Universal server that can stream Windows Media, Quicktime, Real
Media, MP3s and more that is accessible to every faculty member via FTP
with their e-mail userid and password and a MediaSite server which is
used to stream live and archived recordings done by CIT.
Content Creation
Digital content, for our streaming servers, can be created in many ways.
The most common methods are:
- Convert from VHS, DVD or miniDV
- Recording in one of the two Streaming Classrooms on campus (Tolentine 14
Tolentine 19)
- Being recorded with the Media Site Live mobile unit which captures video
and computer input
Please Note: CIT can not digitize whole movies or other copyrighted
works with out permission from the copyright holder. Additionally CIT
will not duplicate movies and or other copyrighted materials in their
entirety. This includes converting from VHS to/from DVD or duplicating
copyrighted works on VHS tapes or DVDs.
Content that is being digitized by CIT will take up to seven days to be
completed, depending on the complexity of the conversion. Timeframes for
other services such as video creation/production will vary by project.
