Student response technology is an effective tool that
helps facilitate pedagogical best practices and enhance
student learning Student response systems, sometimes
referred to as classroom clickers, assist in the engagement
of students in the learning process.
Clickers are becoming more common on today's college campuses. Students can
purchase them along with a textbook through the campus bookstore. The same
click could be used by the student in multiple courses.
In the classroom student response systems are used for taking attendance,
which can save time especially in large lecture style classes. The systems
are also used for gaging student understanding during a lecture. For example
questions may be placed within a PowerPoint lecture and asked during the lecture
with students entering their response on the clicker. Responses are instantly
tabulated giving both instructor and students immediate feedback.
Clickers are typically small in size resembling a credit card with buttons.
They communicate with a receiver attached through a USB port to the instructors
computer. This communication is generally via radio frequency or infrared technology.
The student clicker uses batteries which will need to be replaced from time to time
by the students. Batteries may be available from the campus bookstore.
In general student response systems promote active learning in the classroom.
Instructors have a chance to assess students on the spot and get feedback on the
speed of delivery of classroom material. With student response systems it is easy to
poll students. when using clickers in the classroom,
you will have two options. First, you can use the
clickers as an anonymous polling tool which requires no
integration with Blackboard. Or, you can integrate
with Blackboard to take attendance, polling, etc to factor
into the student's grade. For more information, click
