Networking & Internet Connectivity @ VU

Communication Jacks

Each dorm room is equipped with one data jack per resident student.  Upon his or her arrival on campus each student will be issued documentation explaining the available functions and services that the Network and Communications area offers.  The data jack will connect students to the University data bases and web connections.

This service is included in the room and board for each student.  There is no need for a student to have an outside email account or off campus Internet provider.  If they choose to connect to outside services they are responsible for all charges associated with that service.

Dorm Room Connections

All dorm rooms on campus are equipped with Ethernet connections.  The data ports are located on the right side of the quad box that is in the dorm.  If the data inserts are black thy\\n you must use a GRAY Ethernet cable.  If the insert is GREEN then you must use a green Ethernet cable.  You can tell if there is a link by looking at the Ethernet card in your computer and seeing if there are lights on and blinking.  If not, the contact either the Student Support Center or call the Help Desk at 610-619-7777.

Cables can be purchased at the Student Support Center if needed.  If you bring a cable from home chances are that it will not work in your dorm rooms.  The gray cables at Villanova are different from the gray cables that can be purchased from other computer stores.  So make sure you have the right cable.

Campus-Wide Connections

There are many public data Ethernet connections throughout campus.  These locations require the green Ethernet cables.  As well as the connections that are present in class rooms in buildings like Bartley, CEER, and Mendel.

In the Fall of 2007, Villanova will have 450Mb bandwidth to the commodity Internet and 25Mb to Internet2.
