Tips for Bringing Your Own Computer

I already have a computer. Can I still use this at Villanova?

Many students at Villanova bring their home computer to use on campus. In order to use the resources of the Villanova network (internet access, e-mail, University software, etc.) students need to have an Ethernet card installed on their machine, and an official Villanova Ethernet cable purchased through the University.

If you will be purchasing a new system before arriving at Villanova, we recommend that you have an Ethernet card pre-installed on your computer. We have also compiled a list of Recommended System Requirements for students who plan on using the Villanova Network.

The CSC will assist the student who bring their own computers to campus, however, we cannot guarantee that the computer will successfully connect to the university network.

For students who require Ethernet cards, both desktop and laptop connectivity kits are available for purchase through the CSC. To find out more about Connectivity Kits, check out the CSC Store.

What do we support?

  • Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro
  • Limited Support for Windows 95 and Windows ME
  • Macintosh and Windows 3.x are not supported.

I use AOL at home, do I need my own Internet Service Provider (ISP) for internet access at Villanova?

All Villanova University Residence Halls are wired to provide high speed network access to the internet, e-mail and the Villanova network from the convenience of your room. Most students take advantage of the University's internet access via Ethernet rather than using a dial-up/ modem based ISP. Students in the residence halls need an Ethernet connection (card and cable) from their PC to the port provided in your room. For more information about campus computing resources, check out the Connecting on Campus Section.
