Frequently Asked Questions

What is U-Vault?

U-Vault is automated software to store "MY Documents" and "Desktop" data (research papers, homework, drawings, pictures, and music).

How does U-Vault work?

U-Vault looks at all the files in your backup set to see if anything is new or has changed since the last backup was performed. It compresses them, encrypts them for security, and automatically sends the data through the Internet to an off site location.

When does U-Vault run?

The version running at Villanova which you use will run sometime between 8PM and 8AM. This time was randomized when you installed U-Vault.

Can U-Vault run at other times?

Yes. U-Vault can run anytime you like as long as you are connected to the Internet. Under the Backup menu, there is an option to Backup Now.

Will U-Vault run when I am not on campus?

Yes, as long as you are connected to an Internet connection. It is not dependent on the Villanova University Network.

What can U-Vault store off-site?

When you install U-Vault, it is automatically set to backup everything from the My Documents folder and My Desktop.

How do I know my off-site backups are working?

Two ways; a log of your results is returned to the software after each backup. You can click on the Logs tab and they are sorted by day. A second way will be via email. An email can be sent to you after each backup with the log information.

What is involved in restoring information if it is lost from your computer?

The restore process for individual files is straight forward. Just go to the Restore tab, find the files you want, select what day you want to restore, and as long as you are connected to the Internet, it will restore your files. If your machine is lost, stolen, or needs to be re-imaged you will need to re-install the software. When you attempt to restore on a re-imaged machine, it will first retrieve your history so you can select a full restore.

Is there a limit to how much I can store off-site?

For the 2007-2008 school year, there is a limit of 10GB for your account. Since U-Vault compresses your information before sending off-site, this could represent much more in actual space.

Can Villanova UNIT see my information when it is off-site?

No. Your information remains encrypted. The only computer able to retrieve your information is your computer with your U-Vault account.

What computers will U-Vault work on?

Only Villanova University issued laptops will be supported.

Is there a cost to use U-Vault?

For the 2007-2008 school year, Villanova University provides each student in a Laptop Required Program an U-Vault Account.
