WebDAV is now installed on the University webservers. This enables editors to
use a web editing tool of choice rather than just using FrontPage. At this time
UNIT Web Services supports FrontPage WebDAV, Contribute and KomPoZer.
Microsoft stopped supporting FrontPage Server Extensions, which means that
the process for editing Villanova websites has now changed. While you will still
use FrontPage to edit Villanova websites, the actual procedure for doing so will
be slightly different. You will now use a procedure called WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) to publish pages
and files to your website. In addition, the FrontPage enabled special features Hit Counters,
Scrolling Marquees, Online Forms, etc. will no longer function in WebDAV, but
UNIT has provided alternate code.
FrontPage is included in the Microsoft Suite for PC users. KompoZer is installed on the MACs.
UNIT has limited Contribute licenses available for only those users editing
University Web Standard Websites. To report a WebDAV problem, request Contribute training or schedule an
installation, please go to
UNIT’s Self Service
Help Desk.
Web Standards Site Editing
Users editing University websites can now use any tool for web editing. The
University supports FrontPage WebDAV, Contribute and KompoZer. Training sessions
are scheduled throughout the year and requests can be made though the Help Desk.
Non Web Standards Sites Editing
Student Organization sites do not have to adhere to the University Standards
and have not been migrated to the new University template. Most organizations
want to maintain their own look and feel. WebDAV is also available for these
sites and editing tools include FrontPage WebDAV, KompoZer or any tool the of the editor's
choosing. However, accessing and saving files on the websites has changed. Please click here for instructions.
User Homepages
In the past, Villanova faculty, staff and students were restricted to using
Microsoft FrontPage when editing their Villanova websites. In order to connect
to the Villanova web server, Microsoft FrontPage used a feature called
“FrontPage Server Extensions.” Server Extensions made editing and saving
Villanova web pages easy because one could create a webpage and save it directly
to the web for production. Server Extensions also enabled editors to use several features to enhance their websites, including
Hit Counters, Scrolling Marquees, Online Forms, etc.
The process for editing your Villanova website has now changed. While
you will still use FrontPage to edit your Villanova website, the actual
procedure for doing so will be slightly different. You will now use a procedure
called WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) to publish pages
and files to your website. In addition, the FrontPage special features listed
above (Hit Counters, etc.) will no longer function in WebDAV.
This new web editing procedure is slightly more complex than before, but if
you follow the directions below you should have no problem editing your
Villanova website. Whether you are a first-time web editor or an expert, you
must follow the directions below very carefully, paying close attention to the
special Notes along the way. If at any point, you have problems, please call the
UNIT Helpdesk at 610-519-7777 (x97777).
Instructions are included here for both FrontPage
WebDAV and
KompoZer for MACS.
