Troubleshooting your Wireless Access

UNIT supports the Secure W2 local wireless client. Secure W2 is used by all administrative departments and colleges and is our fully supported wireless client.

Win 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and MAC's are not supported. See requirements page for more detail. The TechZONE will assist the student who bring their own computers to campus, however, we cannot guarantee that the computer will successfully connect to the university network.

Due to the nature of wireless networking, the VU TechZONE is limited in the level of support it can provide our users. Villanova offers support in the following areas at this time:

  • Verifying the configuration of the supported wireless card.
  • Verifying that the wireless access point(s) at the user's location is working.

Please note that wireless networking is not available in all areas of campus. For information on where Villanova Wireless is available, click here.

Service Downtime

If you should encounter a problem with your wireless connection, please visit the TechZONE in Vasey 101. Please keep in mind, however, that the TECHZONE does not offer 24-hour support. Any questions or problems you may have outside of general business hours will be handled ASAP.

The TechZONE staff member will verify your supported wireless card configuration, if it is one of our recommended cards and verify that the wireless access point in your location is working properly. If a user's card is configured correctly and the access point is working properly, the user will be advised to either try accessing the network from another location or obtain other assistance. All wireless problems must come to the TechZONE in Vasey 101 for assistance.

Wireless connectivity can be hampered by any water-based material (including trees and even people) or other obstacles like walls or doors. The TechZONE cannot do anything to rectify slow, intermittent connections or loss of connectivity created by such obstacles.

If an access point(s) is not working properly, or if multiple users in the same location with correctly configured cards are not connecting, please call us.

Policies and Security

Users of the Villanova University Network are expected to be familiar with and to follow the policies and guidelines set forth by the University and UNIT. You, as a user, are responsible for your own computer's security and for the security of any other device you may use with your wireless service. Use of an anti-virus program is highly recommended.

Applications and Development
All the applications and resources that you intend to use or access via your wireless service may not work to your expectations. Access to proprietary or TechZONE supported servers, networks or resources (aka, "third party resources") cannot be guaranteed. The TechZONE does not offer support for third party resources.

Hardware
While there are no general restrictions or system requirements for using TechZONE Wireless, not all computer systems or devices will work with the Villanova wireless network.  The TechZONE does not install or support the installation of wireless cards. While any card that uses the IEEE 802.11a/b standard should work with Villanova Wireless, support for other networking hardware that may be used with the wireless network is not guaranteed. Concerns about hardware compatibility should be directed to the hardware manufacturer. The TechZONE does not service or repair problems with hardware not associated with Villanova.
