Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Master's Program in Biology must hold a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies, with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and should have completed:

  • Twenty-four credit hours of undergraduate biology (including genetics), and
  • One year each of physics, chemistry, organic chemistry and calculus (or calculus plus statistics).

Students coming to biology from a non-biological background or who are lacking one of more of the prerequisites are encouraged to contact the Program Director to discuss their possibilities. Undergraduate coursework is available through the Office of Part-time Studies.

  1. Please visit the web pages of the Office of Graduate Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at www.gradartsci.villanova.edu to request additional information, view application deadlines or to begin your online application.

  2. Contact the Program Director at gradbio@villanova.edu or 610-519-7424 to discuss your interests, needs, qualifications and goals.

  3. Applicants to a Degree Program should submit the following materials to
    the Office of Graduate Studies:
    • Application online.
    • Fee (unless waived by attending an Open House)
    • Transcripts. Step 1 - You may upload unofficial copies of your transcripts in the online application in order to receive an admission decision. However, those who are offered admission must complete the following process in order to enroll. Step 2- Official transcripts of all previous college work undergraduate (and graduate where applicable), must be sent directly from your registrar's office to the Office of Graduate Studies at Villanova. (Applicants in their last year of undergraduate study who have not completed their bachelor’s degree should provide a transcript of all courses completed at the time of application, and submit an official transcript when the undergraduate degree is completed.)
    • Three Letters of Recommendation; please use the online application.
    • Graduate Record Examination. The general GREs are required and the subject GREs are recommended for the degree programs in Biology. Please note that GRE scores from tests taken more than five years before the date of application will not be accepted.

  4. Deadlines: Applicants for the Fall Semester who are applying for assistantships should have their completed applications submitted by February 1 of the year in which they seek admission. Additionally, these applicants should complete the supplemental application form for Biology.

  5. Applicants to a non-degree Certificate Program submit the following materials:
    • Application for admission online.
    • Application fee. (Unless the fee is waived for students with a Villanova degree or who attending an Open House.)
    • Transcripts. Step 1 - You may upload unofficial copies of your transcripts in the online application in order to receive an admission decision. Students interested in pursuing the Master of Science degree and/or being considered for a Teaching assistantship should also complete and submit the Grad Supplemental Application.
