Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer based technologies & methodologies for collecting, managing, manipulating,
analyzing, modeling, and presenting spatially referenced data. These systems are used for mapping and to support in geographically
based decision making.

Who Benefits From GIS

Since the majority of data has a spatial component, GIS is a multidisciplinary subject with valuable applications in:

  • Geography
  • Environmental Science
  • Biology
  • Political Science
  • Conservation
  • Engineering

GIS Facility

Villanova University’s Department of Geography & Environmental Studies maintains a state of the art Geographic Information System (GIS) laboratory. Established in 2008, the GIS Laboratory provides:

  • An interactive classroom environment to teach methods and fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote Sensing.
  • A setting for faculty and students to conduct scientific geo-spatial research.
  • Advanced hardware and software for analysis and presentation of spatial data.

Any students or faculty interested in utilizing ESRI's ArcGIS suite of software can access it from vDesktop (vu username and password required).
