Mission Statement and Learning Goals

In recognition of the global nature of the Augustinian Mission and the commitment of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Villanova University to its achievement, the proposed Institute for Global Interdisciplinary Study can be seen as an integral component to the fulfillment of that Mission. The Institute for Global Interdisciplinary Studies will be central to both the missions of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the University; and, it will also satisfy critical dimensions of the Cross-University Diversity Strategic Plan. The Institute for Global Interdisciplinary Study will be crucial to meeting the needs required for participation in a global society by creating a new generation of problem-solvers that is in keeping with the Catholic and Augustinian ideals of the University, in particular, its commitments to Justice and Peace. This will be achieved by promoting the highest levels of intellectual engagement in the integration of what have been traditionally taught and conventionally thought of as disparate disciplines and fields of study.

This paradigm centers on the College of Liberal Arts and Science’s service to the broader University community in the humanization and globalization of the professions and disciplines. It emphasizes their interconnectedness with human endeavor and our broadest intellectual lives. It promotes the continued conversation between the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, and the professions, at a global level.

Learning goals for majors:

The Institute pursues two sets of interlocking initiatives:

 1) The promotion and refinement of interdisciplinary intellectual activity and discourse among students, faculty and the University community as a whole through the following:

A. the development of Critical, Analytical Thinking;
B. the development and refinement of Integrated Learning and its applications; and,
C. the provision of intellectual spaces of Academic Rigor that will expose its participants to interlocking methodological, theoretical, and content approaches to intellectual issues and problem solving.

2) The recognition of the University and its constituency as members of a global community with responsibilities for the following:

A. critical engagement with the world;
B. creation of an informed global citizenry; and,
C. informed civic engagement.
