“We are now entering into the beautiful city of Cadiz [Cadith],” announced the soft-voice of our tour guide on the bus from Madrid to Cadiz; his “z” sounded like a “th.” I peered out the window at my new home. Entering a new country becomes an experience that changes one forever: new sights, new smells, and new sounds.

"My experience was unforgettable.  I really appreciate all of the tireless effort and energy that you put into making the program the huge success that it was. I also really enjoyed your class and am very thankful for having the opportunity to take such a class while I was in Spain. I really feel that my Spanish skills have improved as a result of this experience. As the weeks progressed, I found myself thinking less as I was speaking and understanding more as I was listening. I think that I have come a long way."

This 6-week program is designed for students who wish to increase their proficiency in Spanish at the Universidad de Cádiz and to be immersed in the Spanish culture.  Students must have completed SPA 1122 and have a minimum 2.75 GPA as well as a record clean of disciplinary issues.

In Madrid and during the trip students are housed in four-star hotels and meals are provided in local restaurants or at the hotel. In Cádiz, students are housed with Spanish families (full board).

Background Information

Now in its 25th year, this is the oldest functioning international summer program at Villanova. About 25 students register every summer. Cádiz is a port city situated in the Southwestern coast of Spain, a living relic of History to remind us of Cádiz's 3,000 year old Phoenician heritage. Cádiz still conserves its old traditions and people live in a relaxed, safe and friendly atmosphere. The climate is ideal for the summer: approximately 80o F with refreshing sea breezes.
