VILLANOVA, PA, February 9, 2010—Professor Charles Zech, internationally recognized expert in church management and director of the Villanova School of Business Center for the Study of Church Management, has been elected to serve on the Washington Theological Union (WTU) Board of Trustees. On February 19, Professor Zech will begin a three-year term with the prestigious Catholic institution, which is widely acclaimed for training distinguished priests, including Villanova University president Rev. WTU also strives to foster collaboration within church ministries.

“Charles Zech's Center for the Study of Church Management is an example of such collaboration in action,” said Rev. Frank Donio, SAC, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Time after time, Zech’s center has benefited the United States Roman Catholic Church through academic research, its one-of-a-kind Master of Science in Church Management program, and the Summer Church Management Institute. Professor Zech will make a valuable contribution to WTU with his understanding of stewardship, development, and church management.”

As board member, Professor Zech will support Union development efforts by engaging with prospective donors and implementing new fundraising initiatives. He'll also serve with fellow trustees on board committees, specifically the committee for budgetary and business affairs.

"I am honored to be elected to the Board and am looking forward to working with the other Board members to further the mission of the WTU,” said Professor Zech, who performs research in parish management and church giving. Zech also developed the Master of Science in Church Management program at the Villanova School of Business – a graduate-level business program for national and international church managers who oversee parish management and operations.

“I would like to see all seminaries recognize the importance of training future pastors with business knowledge to be parish leaders. While most seminaries are reluctant to teach management skills to seminarians, I hope that WTU becomes a leader in this effort.”

In addition to serving as the director for the Center for the Study of Church Management at the Villanova School of Business, Professor Zech is a faculty member teaching Economics and Statistics at VSB. For more information on his research please visit: www.villanova.edu/business.
