Entrepreneurs Win Big at Pitch Day

Villanova, PA, May 1, 2014 – On April 24 finalists from the Villanova Student Entrepreneurship Competition (VSEC) presented to a panel of judges as part of the University’s “Pitch Day,” an annual event coordinated by the Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center). The teams were made up of a wide variety of students across all colleges at the University. Teams were given just 15 minutes to pitch their idea, and were judged on feasibility, innovation, and team chemistry and cohesion.

Scott Glosselin ’16 CLAS and Mary Kate Hamilton ’16 CON won the first place trophy and a $5,000 cash prize for their idea “Bunkalow.” Their product is covering designed for college students living on campus, providing an affordable, aesthetic and useful product to small-space dwellers.

Second place winners Lincoln Escobar ’16 VSB and Zachary Marks ’14 VSB created “Find Stuff to Do (FiStuDo).” This mobile application allows Villanova students, and eventually students from hundreds of other colleges and universities, to find, create and review events at no cost. Escobar and Marks won the Burke Family Prize and took home $3,000 for their dynamic, innovative idea.

“Sound Surround,” pitched by William Kapcio ’14 COE, Kyle Hartner ’14 COE and John Hannah ’14 VSB, won third place, the Memorable Care Prize. For this placement, the team won a $2,000 prize. Sound Surround is an Android application that synchronizes multiple mobile devices’ audio output via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct for the purpose of amplifying volume.

This year’s Pitch Day also included “VU”ers Choice awards, which went to the best VSEC video submissions. The first place VUers Choice first place award went to “FiStuDo,” and the AiRPay team won the VUers Choice second place award.

Finally, also during the Pitch Day festivities, the Holloran Social Entrepreneurship Prize was given to Feel Good Food Trucks for their socially responsible project.

“It was exciting to see the increase in both the quantity and quality of entries in this year’s VSEC,” said ICE Center Director II Luscri. “We are especially proud to recognize students from across the University – in all academic programs – who are actively engaging in entrepreneurial activity.”
