VSB Sponsors 30th Annual Joseph L. Lucia Public Policy Lecture in Economics, featuring world-renown scholar Sir Angus Deaton

VILLANOVA, Pa., November 30, 2017 — The Villanova School of Business (VSB) and the Villanova University Department of Economics proudly sponsored the 30th annual Joseph L. Lucia Public Policy Lecture in Economics, featuring a keynote lecture from Sir Angus Deaton, Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.

The Joseph L. Lucia Public Policy Lecture series features world-renowned thinkers and leaders of their fields, typically focusing on research in the areas of public policy and economics. In the past, the lecture has hosted notable names in economics such as Nobel Laureates James Buchanan, James Tobin, Joseph Stiglitz, Alvin Roth and Dale Mortensen.

“Celebrating 30 years of our lecture series is a true testament to the enduring relationship between public policy and economics,” said Peter Zaleski, PhD, Chair, Economics. “We are very proud to offer this series to the Villanova community and look forward to many more years of meaningful discussion.”

This year’s keynote, Sir Angus Deaton, spoke about his current pursuits, including research on increasing mortality rates around the world, and on the determinants of health and well-being, particularly on relationships with income, both domestically and internationally.

He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, and was the first recipient of the Society's Frisch Medal for Applied Econometrics. He served as President of the American Economic Association in 2009 and holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University as well as honorary doctorates from the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, University College, London, the University of St Andrews, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cyprus and Brown University. He was the recipient of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2015. In 2016, he was made a Knight Bachelor for his services to economics and international affairs.

Additionally, Sir Angus Deaton has received numerous plaudits for his work and research, with Politico naming him, along with his wife Anne Case, as members of 2016’s Politico 50 for their work and its impact on the political landscape of the United States.
