1. What inspired you to join the VSB mentor program?

“I would not be in the position I’m in today if it were not for the enthusiastic and knowledgeable mentors that helped me along my career path. I think what makes Villanova such a special place is the “pay it forward” mentality of so many of its alumni, faculty and staff. To me, the mentorship program is a perfect embodiment of that mentality, so I am delighted to be a part of it.” – Kevin Levy

“I was inspired to join the VSB mentoring program because I wanted to take advantage of one of the many opportunities VSB provides. I was eager to learn more about the sports and entertainment profession, and having a mentor to help me was too good of an opportunity to miss out on.” – Ryan Dorrycott

2. How has your experience compared to your expectation?

“It has far exceeded my expectations and been even more rewarding than I had hoped it would be. Ryan has been a phenomenal mentee and I couldn’t be more proud or excited to see him setting out on the path that he wants to go down.” – Kevin

“My experience so far has been everything I could've asked for. My mentor, Kevin, has helped me transition into the professional world and is always open for conversation. I was a bit nervous when I first joined because I didn't know how the relationship would work, but when both parties are willing to make it work the mentorship is successful.” – Ryan

3. What makes your relationship a successful one?

“Communication is definitely one of the most important factors. Our backgrounds and interests almost identically mirror one another so it’s been a natural fit right out of the gate.” – Kevin

The most important thing is to always be willing to talk. Don't be afraid to ask questions and really get to know your mentor. They want to give back just as much as you want to learn, so don't be shy!” – Ryan

4. What has been the best part about having a mentor/mentee?

“Seeing Ryan succeed in the sports marketing world has been the most satisfying part of being a mentor. Hearing the excitement in his voice when he was offered the internship with the Philadelphia Phillies was as rewarding of an experience as I could have imagined when we started working together.” – Kevin

The best part thus far is having somebody I can go to for professional and educational advice. While professors and Clay Center advisers are extremely helpful, the mentorship program provides insight into what is expected in the real world. All I have to do is send Kevin a text or an email, and he has always been there.” – Ryan

5. Do you have a best practice to share with other pairs in the program?

“I think our communication during his interview process played an integral part in Ryan ultimately being offered the internship. It’s not just about the preparation and how you perform during the interview, it’s equally, if not more, important how you follow up and stay top of mind with the hiring manager. We discussed several strategies for communicating with the employer post-interview and ultimately moved forward with a plan that helped Ryan stand out from the competition.” – Kevin

Your mentor is going out of his or her way to give back to the University, so be gracious and humble. It is an awesome chance to get to know someone who has been in your shoes before;  be prepared to listen and contribute to conversation.” – Ryan

6. Ryan – talk about your Philadelphia Phillies internship experience.  How has it influenced your career plans?

“I have nothing but good things to say about interning for the Phillies. I worked in the Marketing & Events department and I was surrounded by awesome coworkers who were always willing to help. My supervisors and the whole organization were very respectful and taught me a lot about what it means to be a true professional. While I may not be working a traditional business position, I have learned the importance of organization and team work. There is something new and exciting each and every day at the ballpark and my internship has only enhanced my passion for the sports and entertainment industry.” – Ryan

7. Kevin – feel free to share any observations you have experienced working with Ryan over the last 16 months.

“Ryan has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I could not be happier that he secured a highly sought-after internship with the Phillies. What impresses me the most is his maturity and his willingness to ask questions. He is eager to learn and has the right mindset to achieve great things in the sports marketing industry. I have no doubt that he has a bright future ahead of himself!” – Kevin
