Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Email: metin.duran@villanova.edu
University Profile

Dr. Metin Duran received his undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey. He went to graduate school at Vanderbilt University, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1996. Currently, he is an associate professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Villanova University. His research concentrates on application of biological processes for wastewater treatment and water quality control. His work on microbial source tracking received the Best Master's Thesis Award from the Association of Environmental Engineers and Science Professors in 2006. Recently, he has been making use of genomic tool such as PCR and gene expression to better understand the biological processes of environmental engineering.

Vedat Yilmaz, Ph.D.
Visiting Research Fellow, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department
Email: vyilma01@villanova.edu

Dr. Vedat YILMAZ is a research assistant at Akdeniz University in  Antalya-Turkey. He received his B.S. degree from Middle East Technical  University (METU) in Ankara, and he earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering in 2007 from Department of Environmental Engineering at  METU. Dr. Yilmaz's doctoral dissertation was on the enhancement of  biogas production from dairy manure. He studies on organic wastes as a source of renewable energy and techniques of pollution prevention. His current research focuses on the use molecular tools to biomonitor  anaerobic digesters. He working as a post-doctoral researcher at Villanova University, Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology  Laboratory, awarded from Turkish Higher Education Fellow.

Sevda Alanya, Ph.D Candidate
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department
Email: sevda.alanya@villanova.edu

Sevda received her B.S. degree from the Department of Environmental Engineering of Middle East Technical University, Turkey. She attended the Graduate School of Villanova University and earned her M.S. degree in July 2009 from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Her research was based on gene expression monitoring for detection and quantification of viable but non-culturable microorganisms. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in the College of Engineering of Villanova University.
