Roosevelt Planter

One of the Philadelphia Water Department’s commonly utilized green infrastructure designs is the stormwater planter trench, like the one installed at this site. A stormwater planter manages runoff through infiltration and evapotranspiration (or detention and slow-release when underlying soils do not allow for infiltration). The stormwater planters benefit our streams and rivers by reducing stormwater flows into the overburdened combined sewer system, while benefiting the community through greening a significant sidewalk area and enhancing neighborhood aesthetics.

The purpose of the monitoring equipment on the Roosevelt site is to conduct hydrologic and meteorological monitoring of the planter trench. The data collection for this site includes weather conditions, solar radiation, surface ponding within each planter, sub-surface storage (soil moisture), sub-surface ponding within rock bed depth, and overflow. The research collected from this site will help evaluate, design and validate next generation green infrastructure. This includes the evaluation of the benefits of green infrastructure to neighborhoods and the dissemination of results to include STEM educational outreach (K-12).

Weather Station

The Vaisala weather station is located on top of the fence near the planters. This weather station measures temperature, humidity, wind speed, direction, barometric pressure, and rainfall.There is also a pyranometer on top of the fence that is recording the solar radiation.

Soil moisture meters are installed at various depths to measure sub-surface storage.

Equipment with Planter

There is a shallow well installed within each planter that measures surface ponding, the depth of water within each planter. The soil moisture meter on the left is installed at various depths to measure sub-surface storage.
