As of March 30, 2017, the Department of Education released the following statement regarding the IRS Data Retrieval Tool: "To protect sensitive taxpayer data, the IRS and FSA announced today the Data Retrieval Tool on fafsa.gov and studentloans.gov will be unavailable until extra security protections can be added. While we are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible, students and families should plan for the tool to be offline until the start of the next FAFSA season." Due to this issue, anyone selected for federal verification must submit signed copies of their 2015 US Federal Income Tax Returns while the Data Retrieval Tool is down.
*To complete verification, students and parents can use the IRS Tax Data Retrieval Tool when filling out the FAFSA. If you are not eligible for the DRT, please request an official IRS tax transcript. Please view the Federal Verification Process for more information regarding completing this federal requirement.
Please Note: The documentation mentioned above is ONLY required if you are selected for the verification process. You can determine if you are required to submit these documents by viewing your outstanding requirements via MyNova account.
By using the above documentation that we receive from you, the Office of Financial Assistance will verify your information. If a discrepancy or conflicting information is found, we may need additional documents from you to complete the verification process. Our office will notify you in writing if an item is missing or incomplete in order to complete this review. Please note that if you do not use the IRS Tax Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA, we will need a copy of the IRS Tax Return Transcript for both the student and parent(s), if dependent.
