The Philadelphia Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section named Steve Bertil ’16 recipient of the 2016 Irvin Stander award for excellence in administrative law. A testament to Bertil’s accomplishments, this distinctive honor is given to an outstanding graduating law student who has demonstrated legal acumen in administrative law or workers’ compensation.
“As someone who has always been interested in administrative law, it was blessing to have the opportunity to explore it here at Villanova,” said Bertil. “The opportunities at Villanova Law afforded me the experiences that qualified me as a candidate for this award.”
Named in memory of Judge Irvin Stander, a Philadelphia Judge who known for his prolific writings on workers’ compensation and zoning law, this award is given annually. The committee seeks an individual who has demonstrated passion for administrative or workers’ compensation law through related employment, internship, publications or other activities.
As a law student, Bertil participated in the Pro Bono Society, the Walter Lucas Public Interest Fellowship Program (PIFP) and worked in Villanova Law’s Interdisciplinary Health Law Clinic—which helps low-income clients assert their rights within the legal and health care systems.
“This recognition will become an impetus for turning my interest in administrative law into a career. It is an honor to receive an award named after a juggernaut in the field,” Bertil said.
