The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC) recently honored Villanova Law’s Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services (CARES) with the Light of Liberty Pro Bono Law Firm award for its dedicated service to vulnerable immigrants in detention and in the community.
PIRC, a nonprofit organization serving south central Pennsylvania, provides legal services to asylum-seekers held in civil detention. In its fifth year, the Light of Liberty Awards recognize the many volunteers and supporters working with PIRC to provide services to more than 2,000 immigrants.
CARES, one of seven in-house clinics at Villanova Law, is an international human rights and immigration clinic. Students working in CARES represent refugees who have fled human rights abuses in their home countries and seek religious or political asylum in the United States. Every semester the work of CARES students results in saving the lives of their clients and reuniting their clients with family members.
