Who Are Refugees?

‘Who Are Refugees?’ is sponsored by the CARES Clinic in the Villanova Law School and the Villanova Partnership with Catholic Relief Services. In addition to Michele Pistone, Luis Canales who is a 3rd year law student who came (walked) to the US from Honduras as an unaccompanied minor as a teenager and several former refugee clients of the Law Schools Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services (CARES) will speak. CARES is part of the Law School’s Clinical Program through which law students provide free legal services to refugees and their families. Students represent clients before the Department of Homeland Security and immigration courts. This event coincides with the UN General Assembly Summit that is being hosted on September 19th on the topic of global refugee protection. The high-level summit will address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach.

This is the first time the General Assembly has called for a summit at the Heads of State and Government level on large movements of refugees and migrants and it is a historic opportunity to come up with a blueprint for a better international response. It is a watershed moment to strengthen governance of international migration and a unique opportunity for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.
