Scholarships and Other Funding

This page contains many useful scholarship links for specific countries, program providers, and organizations around the world. Also included are scholarships offered through Villanova University, and search engines that are all available to you on this page. Please note that this list of funding is by no means complete.

There exists an immense amount of resources available to those that voluntarily seek them. We ask that if you do receive financial aid, grants, scholarships or loans to please contact the Office of Financial Assistance: (610) 519-6456.

Additionally, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowship will be a resource for all funding questions. Within this page is an excellent list of scholarship opportunities for study abroad and beyond! Villanova Scholarship Opportunities

General Scholarships

  • Frank Huntington Beebe Fellowship: The purpose of the Fund is to provide fellowships for gifted young musicians, generally performers and composers in classical disciplines, who wish to pursue advanced music study and performance abroad, usually in Europe.
  • Gilman International Scholarships: Provides up to $5000 for study abroad in any nation. Priority given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants.

  • Institute of International Education: Sorts scholarship money by study abroad location.
  • Institute for International Public Policy: Undergraduate funding for study abroad summer institute, language immersion programs, and internships. Money for master's study of international affairs available as well. Open to sophomore under-represented students with a GPA of at least 3.2.
  • National Italian American Foundation Scholarship
  • NSEP-National Security Education Program is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and enhance international cooperation and security. NSEP awards will range from full scholarships (covering tuition and other program costs, round-trip airfare on a U.S. flag carrier, health insurance, and local transportation) to awards of up to $8,000 for summer, $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for an academic year.   • Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships: Various scholarships for foreign study and foreign travel. The three major scholarships programs are: 1) full funding for academic year abroad, 2) full funding for 2-3 year degree programs abroad, and 3) full funding for foreign language study abroad.
  • Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant: Open to students who have a cumulative grade point average of a least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale. Each year Phi Kappa Phi awards 75 Study Abroad grants of $1000 each.
  • Fund for Education Abroad: FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. Deadline is January 18, 2016 - up to $10,000 awarded!
  • Las Dos Chicas Scholarship: Provides financial scholarships for college students majoring in global studies, foreign languages, or a teaching certificate in foreign languages. 
  • Diversity Abroad:  Applicants must be full-time undergraduates at a university or community college based in the United States. Students must participate in a study abroad program offered by a DiversityAbroad.com partner organization. Economically disadvantaged students, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino, Multiracial/ethnic or Native-American undergraduate students as well as student who study in non traditional locations (Outside western Europe & Australia ) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Program Provider Scholarship Opportunities

  • Arcadia University-Center for Education Abroad: Arcadia University-Center for Education Abroad: The Center for Education Abroad has one of the most extensive scholarship programs of any study abroad organization. Every year Arcadia distributes hundreds of need-based scholarships ranging between $500 and $2,000 for a full-year, semester or term.
  • Boston University: Last year, Boston University International Programs awarded grants and scholarships to 190 students, helping to make their summer, semester, or year abroad possible. You may qualify, too!
  • Institute for Study Abroad - Butler University: IFSA-Butler offers scholarships and travel grants to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • CIEE-Council on International Educational Experiences Scholarships: For many students, a study abroad experience is only possible with financial assistance. Each year CIEE awards scholarships and grants to students who plan to study overseas. Full details of the five different scholarships can be found are described within this link. Please read the eligibility criteria and the application procedures for each scholarship carefully.
  • DIS-Denmark's International Studies Program: The DIS Board has allocated scholarship funds for students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark. 
  • IES-Institute for the International Education of Students: IES believes that financial limitations should not prevent a student from participating in an IES program. For this reason, each year IES commits over $2.15 million to its financial aid programs for students attending IES programs.
  • SIT-School for International Training: About one-third of those who seek scholarships from SIT Study Abroad receive financial assistance to participate in SIT's programs. Awards are made on consideration of both merit and need.
  • Syracuse University Study Abroad: SU Abroad is committed to making study abroad a reality for students from a variety of backgrounds. We offer a number of need- and merit-based grants and scholarships, as well as special incentives, for students participating in SU Abroad programs. Awards are made on a consideration of both merit and need. VU students are not allowed to participate on Option 1 of SU Abroad programs.
  • FIE Study Abroad Sharif Rahman Semester and Quarter Scholarship  The Scholarship for FIE Semester Programs is a unique way to enrich your study abroad program with FIE, not only monetarily, but also by providing you with a platform to have a voice and active involvement in social values shared by your university and FIE.  Students have the choice between three application routes, each offering a scholarship worth $3000 as well as various additional benefits.
  • FIE Generation Study Abroad Spring Scholarship:                          The Generation Study Abroad Scholarships for FIE Spring Semester and Winter & Spring Quarter Programs is a unique way to enrich your study abroad program with FIE, not only monetarily, but also by providing you with a platform to have a voice and active involvement in social values shared by your university and FIE.  Students have the choice between three application routes, each offering a scholarship worth $3000 as well as various additional benefits.

  • Asia
    Japanese Bridging Scholarships - Funds semester or year long study in Japan in any discipline; includes stipend. No knowledge of Japanese language required.

Freeman Asia - The awards are designed for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study in East or Southeast Asia for academic credit.

Academy of International Business Southeast (AIB-SE) and the Asia Institute

PaCIE-Asia Institute Scholarships
Awards scholarship of $1000 in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PaCIE) to support learning experiences for students traveling to Asia in 2016. This scholarship is open to any student from a university and/or college in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, who is enrolled in an Asia based study abroad experience next year.

100,000 Strong Foundation - China-specific

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships - Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for a single academic year of full-time, intensive language study in an approved language program in East or Southeast Asia. Fellows are expected to remain in the study country during the entire period of the grant. To be considered, applicants must have a well-defined career objective involving Asia in which regular use of the language is an important aspect; the potential to make a significant contribution to a field of study or area of professional or business activity in an Asian country; prior experience in the Asian country or involvement or participation in activities related to the country; and a good academic, professional, or business background appropriate to the career program.

    International and Research Exchange Board (IREX): IREX promotes scholarly exchange between the United States and the nations of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

  • Germany
    DAAD Undergraduate Awards: Funds awarded to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad tuition, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research, and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany. Length of stay may range from a few weeks to an entire academic year.

    German Universities of Applied Sciences - UAS7: Spend a semester at a leading German university of applied sciences (UAS), then intern in a company, research institute, or nonprofit!

  • Ireland
    Go Overseas and Education in Ireland: Go Overseas and Education in Ireland are offering 15 undergraduate full-tuition scholarships to study abroad in Ireland, as well as two free round-trip airfare to Ireland, courtesy of Aer Lingus

  • Scotland 
    St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia Scholarship: $15,000 for full year of study abroad in Scotland at any of the following Universities: St. Andrews, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Glasgow.

  • United Kingdom 
    British Council: Information on Scholarships in the United Kingdom.

    BUTEX: £500 scholarships for students studying abroad for one semester or the academic year at select UK institutions.

    AASAP - Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship - The £1,000 annual scholarship provides a deserving study abroad student with financial support to pursue academic study in the United Kingdom. The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at a US college or university, and who will be studying abroad in the UK for at least one term/semester in the 2013/14 academic year.   • The Financial Aid Page: One of the first web-based guides to finding scholarships and understanding U.S. federal financial aid, it even has a section that lists scholarships for study abroad.
