"I was judged by three distinguished members of the science community and was awarded honorable mention for my poster presentation. Out of the about 100 student posters being presented, I am one of about fifteen students who received recognition for their work."

Jani Swiatek received a VURF travel grant to present her research at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting.

On her experience:

"Attending the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting on April 15-20, 2016 was a great experience. I attended over twenty talks throughout my time in New Orleans and many of them dealt with my research problem, so the information I gained will be very relevant in my work. Since I will be completing my senior thesis soon, I have gained some new directions for my work with breast cancer genes that I will record and report for other undergraduate researchers in my lab to continue. I found myself many times daydreaming about the directions that all of this research could go. I am so thankful that I have had this opportunity to visit this meeting as a senior since it gave me interesting information, new perspectives, and a genuine appreciation for the knowledge I have gained throughout my college career. I was able to follow the rationale for most talks that I attended and know that my Villanova education is solely the reason for that. I also gained some valuable insight about presenting scientific data using PowerPoint. When I create my senior thesis PowerPoint presentation, many of the attractive and interesting strategies I observed while at the AACR will be applied such as homemade diagrams and schematics illustrating key points. I also presented my research in the undergraduate poster session using a poster created myself. I was judged by three distinguished members of the science community and was awarded honorable mention for my poster presentation. Out of the about 100 student posters being presented, I am one of about fifteen students who received recognition for their work. While I have been successful among the community at Villanova, I now realize that I can compete with those from many other renowned institutions. I am very appreciative of this opportunity I had to attend this conference, become aware of other researchers’ scientific advances, and validate my own contributions to the field. Thank you for your support!"
